Joe Climan is a 16 year old phenomenal fingerboarder based out of Brentwood, CA. He began fingerboarding over 11 years ago after sustaining a back injury while skateboarding and hasn’t stopped since. Joe has been part of numerous Fingerboard “meet-ups” and hosted many demonstrations as well.

Edgar “Eddy” Vargas
Eddy Vargas has been fingerboarding for 11 years and he is one of the best fingerboarders in Southern California. Vargas has won several prominent fingerboarding contests on the West Coast such as RISE Best Trick 2008/2009. He has also helped judge events like the East Coast Homewood/NoComply Huck Jam.

Maloof Money Cup Weekend, 2009

Last weekend was the second annual Maloof Money Cup in Orange County, CA. The CA Ramp Works and CA Skateparks' crews lived up to their reputations by creating amazing courses for both the vert and street pros! This was the first year in which the mini-mega ramp actually flowed into the vert ramp via an archway, and had a return ramp for the skaters to get back to the top. The street course replicated famous street spots, with marble benches and ledges, brick banks, gnar handrails. Though my favorite piece was just a simple piece of metal screwed to the wall... thrown in by Joe Ciaglia (owner of CA Skateparks). CA Skateparks designed and built the street course.

Every skater was killing the course. Dave Duncan (the announcer) kept saying, "This is a super final", for like every heat that went out. My favorite was when someone left him speechless, and all he got out was, "that was gnarly gnar". The roof gap to bank was just that, and more than one skater including: Appleyard, Sheckler, Huston, Sandoval, and Busenitz all threw something down on it; Peter Ramondetta skidded out of a huge gap to blunt side down a handrail; Torry Pudwill was popping huge nollies over the handrail. The skaters truly came out of every heat packed full of energy, going for everything they thought of.

In the end, Chris Cole took home $100,000 in street. Tommy Sandoval was second and Nyjah Huston 3rd. Alex Perelson, after landing the 900, took home $75,000. PLG came in 2nd and Bob Burnquist came in third. Leticia Bufoni took away $25,000 for the girls.

To top it all off, Snoop Dog made an appearance, telling the skaters, "get your roll on". I know the white folks secretly be thuggin out in their vehicles to rap lyrics, but when it comes to standing in public, they are as stiff as a board. Snoop could barely get us to "put our hands in the air", yo.

Throughout the weekend, Dug and I had to get "our roll on", so we stoppoed by the Hurley facility, Ocean Beach Park, and Volcom Park. All fun:) Pictures below.

Top Things to Expect When you say "Yes!" to a Skater by Profession.

Part of a journal entry, this article was written back in March. I was inspired to write this piece when my fiancé e-mailed me -on yet another jobless morning- (after having moved halfway across the country to Phoenix), about possible summer work. Dug is a graphic designer/ ramp builder for California Ramp Works, and this company needed a girl skater for the summer. I could leave for 4 months, skate 5 times a week, 3 times a day for 150.00/ day. Not bad pay, but when you’ve literally just gotten out of a cast from a broken ankle, marathon skateboarding is not the exactly top on the list. At anyrate, it made me laugh to think about all the things I am signing myself up for come November, when we’ll actually be married. Here’s the list I came up with.

1. Expect a season or 2 of Community Living. In the past 9 months, since the time we’ve been engaged, I’ve lived with over 5 different people. Even when we moved halfway across the country, from FL to AZ, the spare bedroom was renovated to a Florida friend shortly after.

2. Your house resembles a Retail Store. I just removed a pair of Steve Caballero's used shoes left over from his runs at the Mega Ramp, this past ASR show. They were on display a top the television set- crossed and pointed toe. For now, I have given into the fact that there is no room for a designated space for the two multi-leveled skate racks, which hold boards of old-school and new, to dog pullin and the skate park go-to.

3. You’re along for a ride. Basically, if you enjoy kissing ass, then the sk8 industry isn’t for you. Until you’ve learned enough, met enough people, and payed your dues with the shade-buckets of the industry, this leaves you with one option- a long, unglamorous journey. Fortunately, I got the tail end of his journey… I think.

4. Life is untraditional as a skater, and because of this, society is typically against you from the get-go; equipped with mental and physical stoppers. Hopefully, you learn you’ve got nothing to lose by trying...but everything if you don’t. When Dug told my parents he wanted to marry me, my dad refuted him with nostrils flared, and continued to tell him he was sure I’d say no. Dug responded, “I’m a very patient guy, and will wait a little bit, and ask her again if she says no.” I said Yes.

5. He'll make butter out of cream. Skaters are hard workers, and resourceful by nature… just look what they turn skateable. When Dug got laid off, he still managed to uncover a perfect job for himself in the middle of this lame economy. He did this by looking at what he had available, and making the most of it. On the flipside, now it is my turn.. dang it, I hate when tables turn:)

6. He’s had a go-ahead of a business. I think this is a necessary on the humbling journey of work experience, for life to get you where you need to be. But you will long live with the t-shirts and stickers from the glory days.

7. You better enjoy being a masseuse or physical therapist on the side.
Probably the truest of the list…skaters are always injured. Your nights become
accustomed to “ooh!” and “aaw!” as you accidentally hit your partners new shin
abrasion, swollen ankle, or scab. Backs are usually an issue as well. If they are
builders, even truer. For us though, it means they love our soft touch even more!
So if a dude with softer hands and prettier skin than you comes your way, proceed
with caution, because it means he’s never worked a day in his life, and probably is
going to be a bit of a baby.

8. Life is fun and full of love. I know that this guy has more love for me than anything because he kisses me mad, stays up late to listen to my concerns, and never fails to answer my phone calls. These past 4 months have been a test of our strength and have found that Dug is a master at keeping his head on straight in uncertain times (much better than me), won’t give up in hard times, and most importantly won’t give up on me (of course this works both ways). Because hey, hasn’t every skater met the bottom, in their pursuit to live out their heart. And with that being said, maybe that’s why we get along, because, shit, “This is the only lifestyle we've known.”

Hmm… sort of a weird number to end on, but that’s what I had written in my trusty notebook.

Skateboarders: Entertainers of Not?_ Red Bull Demo at Art Insitute

For all the future builders of skateparks out there, here is a behind the scene look at what it takes to set up a demo-course. Even the small events come with hard work.

What was important to the CA Ramp Works Team (Dug, Rueben, and Travis) on this day, was that the Red Bull skate demo was to start around 2pm at the Art Institute in Costa Mesa, CA. What this translates into is hauling a skate course by trailer from Mesa, Arizona, the previous day and making one stop in LA at their sister warehouse for an additional piece- a gigantic quarter-pipe. Despite the awkwardness, Reuben and Dug man handled the ramp up onto the trailor. Next stop- La Quinta Inn and Suites.

6am- wake up call. Assembly begins. The course was up before noon. Red Bull's Event Manager, though pleased with the course, showed some concern over her main rider Jeremy Rogers. I guess he was "on his way".

Dug and I decided to "test-skate" the course, as it is hard to just look at a skateable piece. The crowd thinks Dug is the show and starts taking pictures. He ollies over me, as I sit on the edge of the fun box (speaking of- I need to find that photographer).

3pm- the first Red Bull rider shows up. Though instead of skating he lingers around, timid to skate on an injured ankle, and unmotivated without his teammate.

4pm- Jeremy finally shows. No sign of skateboard. He asks for food and drink, and proceeds to walk around the course. His teammate has found a few lines without him. Complaints and excuses begin to spill from his mouth as if he had this planned even before he showed... something about the course being sketchy and a waste of his time, besides that he had a rap career he was trying pursue, and the Art Institute event seemed to offer no aide to his current or future career. Interestingly enough, he didn't seem to mind talking to the camera crew there:)

5pm- demo is over, and we head to the VIP bar. After we return, the course has turned into seating for the coming fashion show.
9pm- people start to clear out. The ramps start to come down.
11pm- stop at Hooters for some grub.

Next day- we return the quarter pipe and drive home.

Needless to say, Jeremy Rogers was not the only one who seemed to be inconvenienced that day. As much as I'd like to say that fame has gotten to his head, making him self-seemingly above skating something that is absent of national coverage (hate to tell ya Jeremy- you may have been on his show, but you aren't Sheckler- and I don't think anyone in that audience would have known who you were anyway). On the otherhand, it would also be easy to say that how Jeremy reacted was really just the true skater at heart- unconsciously saying to himself- can't I just skate without an audience anymore? But, the reality is, when he signed that contract, he signed up for the entertainment industry. So, on that note, I'm sure we've all had a case of the pre-madonnas, and even the once humble, unnoticed skateboarder isn't immune to it anymore.

Random Skate Fact #1- World's First Public Skatepark

Well, after a nice google search, Carlsbad Skatepark (RIP) seems to takes the cake, built March 13th of 1976. But following close behind was Santa Cruz's Derby Skatepark, designed by Ken Wormhoudt's design firm (still Wormhoudt, Inc.) sometime in 1976. This is literally just a snake run, but super fun. You basically park your car in a residential area and walk into the park. Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, FL, gets lots of recognition for being one of the oldest still-in-existent skateparks, established in 1977 by the Ramos family.

Investing Today 101: "Sk8boarding is Affordable"

In this article, I am looking at the roots of skateboarding's nature, and why I think it will thrive in tough economic times.... and probably will actually grow in popularity

Local grom- Andrew: New grip job sticks

1. ROOTS- Skateboarding was born from the low-income bracket and broken homes of American youth. Therefore it has
proved to be an affordable sport even when families don't have a lot to spend...I'd say this is pretty relevant to the times
approaching.

2. There is a NEED- for an affordable alternative activity among the middle class family who is being forced to downsize.

3. Built From the Bottom Up- Skateboarding built itself up with little investment backing. Naturally, I think the owners of core
skateboarding companies will also figure out how to adapt back to this without sinking.

4. A Creature of Adaptation- as the environment changes so does a skateboarder's mind. He or she can skateboard on
virtually anything.

5. Creative and Ingenuitive by Nature- Corporations tried to capitalize on skateboarding's popularity and ingenuity, not the
other way around.

6. VIRTUALLY a FREE sport- Free City Skateparks- with more and more cities finding a need for public sk8parks, kids or parents won't have to travel very far to find a place to skateboard. Not to mention, as family spending downsizes, so do those member fees and private lessons.

7. Eco-Friendly Transportation- Sure it may take a little while longer, but you can also transport it on the bus or transit
system easier than a bicycle, or hell, put the skateboard on the bicycle until you reach your destination.

8. All Ages- The board and wheels come in all shapes and sizes, making it easy for young and old to learn or get back into it:)

9. Government Spending Specuation- Many contractors will benefit from Obama's stimulus money for public works projects. Companies who build skateparks have contractor liscences and will be able to bid on new construction and public work projects; so while they may not be sk8board parks, it will be work; therefore helping to keep employees and open new jobs.

10. It's a Tight- Skateboarders and its companies maintain a very tight community, despite the huge growth.... strength in numbers.

Survival of the Fittest

As January opens a new year, so do the bi-annual Surf Expo and Action Sports Retail Trade shows bring in a new season for the Surf and Skateboarding industries. It's no news that these industries are feeling heavily, the effects of the economy, and watching as the gloom of the old brick and mortar retail stores close their doors. So, I wonder (as I did not attend), what will the air of these trade shows tell this year. Good times ahead are characterized by buyers walking in and out of appointments, beer gardens flowing, models walking the aisles, groms knocking on doors with hopes of new sponsorship, big after parties, video premieres, and free posters and stickers smothering the youth as their big eyes take in the awe of the life they aspire to have around them. Unfortunately, the story I heard was.... not many people were there to buy. I have yet to here about this weekend's ASR. I imagine most of the action was behind closed doors, as people discussed the future of the industry.

The question that looms- What will the skate and surf industry capitalize on next? Is their a new niche to be sought out?

The youth, the lifestyle, and the creative, laid back mentality of this industry will probably remain the same, but there are big challenges ahead in order for it to survive as a promising livelihood, with American families cutting back on spending.

Then, there is that www. wholeworldofweb2.0/shop. com. What type of role will it play in the industries survival?

I predict like most businesses, companies will cut budgets A LOT to save jobs. Will it be the pro teams, the tours, the magazine ads, the company snowboarding trips, team houses on the North Shore....

Personally, I think the foundational values of our country and relevant to this article, the surf and skate industry, is being reevaluated by its leaders and founders, and a new direction will be sought out. In the mean time,

the Darwinian Theory will come into play; that this is a natural evolution of the surf and skate industry to shake out the "weaker" links.

Hmm...will they be the core companies or the conglomerates who just hopped on the bandwagon to capitalize on "cool"...
Anyway, just something for you fellow skater citizens to think about.

Neightborhood Tour Stop#1 - Recap

The Charlie Brown Ramp is nested in a backyard in South Daytona, FL, and owned by local skate grom, Nathan. The beauty of the Neighborhood Tour is that it hits up private set-ups, as well as, empty pools. No heavy advertising, so if you can’t find it, you’ll have to wait for the Recap. You can also guarantee every contest will have a different format, different crowd, and different element of challenge. The series is put on by DK Ramps.

Throughout the day, people floated in and out, to hit the wall ride, the ramp, or just mingle by the bb-q. The pictures will show the rest. Keep check on dkramps.com for details on Stop #2.

If you’re a skater in this town, you’ve probably heard a lot about DK Ramps lately- and well, that’s for obvious reasons- they (Dug Ketterman and Erik Brubaker) are out making things happen…and shredding.

DCZ: First off, what kinds of services does DK Ramps offer?
DK: I am currently offering private skateboard, drum, and guitar lessons, backyard mini-ramps and rail construction, contest and demo coordination, skatepark design/construction, graphic design for print and web, and grassroots marketing campaigns.

DCZ: Dug Ketterman, how many years have you been skateboarding?
DK: Jeez...my dad built me my first ramp when I was in first grade...skated for a couple years, then picked up BMX until I was about 12, when I got my first new school board. I have been skating ever since...so I guess that is a total of 18 years.

DCZ: What would you say 12 years involvement in the skate industry has done for you?
DK: I now have a head full of grey hair; I hear it makes me look distinguished... Being able to work with some of the most talented people in the world has given me a broad scope of what is possible in many different aspects of the skateboard community. I have been able to learn from my success and failures; as well as, pull from the collective knowledge of the thousands of professionals, skaters, and families I have grown to know and love...not to mention shiny new sneakers that come in the mail from time to time.

DCZ: Because you have built and managed a slew of skate parks, you have conceptualized, coordinated, and hosted an untold amount of contests and events. Yet, not everyone knows all that goes into hosting an event. So, talk about why it would be advantageous for someone interested in the skate industry to get the DK Ramps name, behind his or her event.
DK: Well, first, let me talk about the difference between a successful contest and a dud. Believe me, I have had plenty of both. In keeping with the tradition of skateboarding, I have measured success in the smiles and energy that comes from not only the participants, but the spectators as well. Most competitions have been following the same traditional format...45 second runs...being judged on 10 different aspects at once...clouding the judges ability to truly give hundreds of accurate and fair scores throughout the afternoon. The loose criteria structure also gives to a common debate at the end of each contest...."Why did that backside flip beat that krook-fakie?", etc. This combined with 8 hours in the hot sun can often produce a less than gratifying experience. I have had the opportunity to experiment with all different types of contest formats, and have finally found a new approach which skaters and parents can grasp. This new level of enjoyment is also achieved in 2 hours or less, allowing families to plan out the rest of their day. I like to keep things simple, organized, and above all else, fun.

DCZ: Upcoming events?
DK: Let's see...this Saturday is the Skaters for Christ contest, demo, and concert in South Daytona Beach. In October, I am helping coordinate a contest with Timeline Productions at Paradise Funplex, Merritt Island, FL. DK Ramps will also be sponsoring a best trick contest with Maui Nix at the Ormond Beach Skatepark. November 6-9th is building the course and running numbers for the Skate and Bike Contest at the Hilton Resort in Cocoa Beach, FL (some names include Kelly Slater and Adam Taylor). In January, it is off to Georgia to judge King of the Groms… and more, plenty more in the works.

DCZ: What's your advice for kids wanting a career in the industry?
DK: Be a sponge. Talk less and listen more. If you are one of those kids that hang around a park or shop all day, every day...help out whenever possible. Also, find out what YOU enjoy doing the most, and pursue the passion that many people miss out on their whole lives. The skateboard industry is a very creative environment, which allows for free-thinking and self-expression, but don't think for a moment, its all gravy like art class...be prepared to work the most heinous hours and take crap from seasoned skate-veterans.

DCZ: Talk about how your environment growing up shaped you.
DK: I'll start off by saying I had my first job at age 5, sanding down wooden parts for my dad. By age 6, I was stocking retail supplies in Creative Castle (my parents craft shop). This led to my first business at the ripe old age of 8: selling fingerboards, necklaces, and wooden Bart Simpson toys at craft fairs in Northwest Indiana. My parents also had me running as a go-fer (waiter) for a 100 booth craft fair before I made it to the 2nd grade; as well as, taught me the fundamentals of entrepreneurship throughout my school days. My business sense now seems to be innate.

DCZ: Talk about some of your first designs and skateable pieces.
DK: I can remember my first launch ramp...2nd grade.... it fell apart when I was jumping over it. I then proceeded to fall onto a 2" bolt that lodged itself into my thigh...oh yes, sweet memories! My first park design was actually built in my friends carpet warehouse. We stored all the ramps up on a top rack using a forklift and brought them down when we were ready to sesh. Quarters, bank ramps, grind boxes, and we even skated the fully adjustable forks on the forklift.

DCZ: What's been your favorite completed project?
DK: I would have to say my first city park, Flounder, in Valparaiso, Indiana. It was not only the inspiration and springboard I needed to start my career, but also stands in memory of a truly great skater and friend, Ray Wampler.

DCZ: Not many people have a resume, the length of yours, which shows a clear direction. Talk about what it takes to not only pursue, but stay true to a passion.
DK: First, be honest. Not just with everyone around you, but with yourself. You need to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are excited about your endeavors, and they are actually making a difference in the world and lives around you.
Second, choose the hard way. When you begin your journey, you will be faced with many roadblocks and hurdles. You are usually faced with two options, the fast easy way that will barely get you by. Or, the hard way that, if you pay attention, will teach you vital information and open more doors than you could possibly imagine. And C- consider the alternative… going through school in your early twenties, getting an entry level position with 300 other people with the exact same degree and lack of experience (typically in a field other than your degree), and slaving away in a cubicle hoping to catch some of the scraps tossed down by the chiefs in command. Wasn’t for me.

DCZ: What keeps you goin’?
DK: The encouragement and support of my amazing family and friends...and the non-stop brain activity that wakes me up every morning looking for a pen and paper.

DCZ: What's been your biggest accomplishment?
DK: I can blow a bubble off my tongue, then pop it before it hits the ground using my salivary gland under my tongue as a shooting apparatus...its simply amazing!

DCZ: What part of the design and building process excites you?
DK: What part doesn't? I would have to say once the project is all said and done, watching skaters rip it to shreds gives me the most satisfaction.
DCZ: What about graphic design?
DK: One of my most influential art teachers, Mrs. Lynn, once told my class to never stop creating art.
Make it a daily habit to keep your skills honed. Graphic design is actually another outlet for my creativity and self-expression. Gotta feed the soul!

DCZ: At what point did you decide it was time to go out on your own?
DK: It was just about the time when everybody I talked to started saying, "Why don't you own your own business...? I guess it just clicked. I was born into an entrepreneurial family, so I new it was just a matter of time before I acquired the experience I needed to begin my journey.

DCZ: Who's your main man?
DK: Erik Brubaker is a local skater and builder here in Daytona Beach. I met him through Stone Edge Skatepark, and realized after working on a few projects together, his humor and solid work ethics were just the balance I needed to build a lasting team.

DCZ: What is your biggest request?
DK: A killer kitchen! I love to cook.

DCZ: What's your motto?
DK: Give all that you have and you will receive all that you need.

DCZ: Future plans, goals, etc. Anything else, you want to ad.
DK: The goal is to travel around the world with my beautiful fiancé, Morgan, and help as many people along the way as humanly possible; recording and reporting our experiences. I feel like I was blessed with the ability to communicate, and I don't like to waste time. I was given a second chance at life when I was 16 years old, and I am going to do my best to use each day wisely, and for the benefit of the awe-inspiring world around us.

Anywhere you venture to is going to have a history. Some places end up being more historical than others; and some may just be revolutionists of their kind. Whatever the case, it's always interesting and sort of inspiring to see what used to be of the places you love to love. In this case, a fond memory in this town is what STONE EDGE SKATEPARK once was. The history behind the park and the people who have skated here, worked here, or just hopped a fence to make it a little more adventurous, is the gold foundation beneath the renovations. Some wish we could just dig up the dirt and those old bowls would be re-lived once again. I get a kick out of seeing old photos; most of which I find through my google-lurking. Like this one of Benji Galloway sneaking into Stone Edge from way-back-when. A decade later and his feet still make their way to the concrete of the only OG piece left, the 9Bowl.

Last weekend 125 kids signed up to skate the Skaterboarders for Christ event, held at South Daytona Christian Church. The whole neighborhood must have come out of the wood-works for this one. Speaking of woodwork, DK Ramps was also out there to help build the course on schedule, as well as- get this- make sure there was something for the girls as well! Well, Osiris Girls took the initiative by sending shirts ahead.
At the DK tent, the gals who challenged their skateboarding abilities, or demonstrated a stupid human act, scored a free tee. And, too much surprise, young, old, and everyone in between had a stupid human trick to show off. These are some pictures from the event.
It was a good turn out, and I'd say this town is pretty dang lucky to have people like Skaters for Christ (Bob Langford and Tim May) and DK Ramps (Dug Ketterman and Erik Brubaker) who are volunteering to build, run, and take down a skate course for the sake of community and fun! So, keep an eye out for the next event, because they are dope.

I met Wes about a year and a half ago, through my first sk8 instructor (Jason). He was working in Jason's Kentucky sk8 shop (N:CE)at the time, and was into what I was trying to get rolling (putting sk8 ramps in at orphanages and youth shelters). Wes, has now become one of my favorite people, because it seems whatever he does, his whole heart is in it. It's freakin awesome when people show some passion and excitement for what they do. Anyway, he skates like a maniac. His Zine (dirtcitychicago.blogspot.com) will be kick ass, I'm sure. He is also on track, or causing ruccus, one, as he is attending Moody Bible School, so that he can become a youth minister. Well, you can now enjoy the fact that the sk8 scene in Chicago will be accessible. We also have a few new features. I asked Wes to write up an introduction letter, so this is it. Man, a barn would be awesome!

Tucked into the low hills, just south of Louisville, Ky, is my Grand Fathers farm, my first skatepark. It's 78 acres of freedom that helped shape me in ways I couldn't imagine. By the time I was in highschool I had been making strange obstacles and skating them on the farm for a year or so, and had know idea there was any certain way to skate. I didn't know about Eric Koston's rule book for "skate", or even there was such a thing as competitive skateboarding.
After I was exposed to the industry I was quickly grabbed up by the local "hesh" crew, we bombed hills, jumped off our high school, hunted for stair sets, and caused a fair amount of down home mayhem. Soon they were too far gone into drugs to skate, and I was standing alone, like the old days. I started to skate downtown Louisville, and make the hour journey to the skate park.
Then it was time for college. My first go at it lasted a year, then I had to go back to my love, wood pushing. I moved to Michigan to skate for Testify Skateboarding Ministry, a youth outreach program. When my circumstance deteriorated I moved back to Louisville, where I met Jason Brown, a ripper left over from the days of speed, back airs, and unpopularity. Then, in 2007 I decided to take a journey back in time. I learned lip tricks, and backside air, while working in N:ce Skateboard's gallery.
Some of you may know that Morgan McDole (Gone Fishing, in my space friends list) is/was on the N:CE's team, prior to the Jacksonville Move. We're all holding our breath to see if N:CE comes back. Any who, after a year of being N:ce i moved back to Chicago for school, this is 2008. That spring break I went to meet Morgan for the first time in Daytona, I wrote and article about this in the Daytona DirtcityZine's blog (follow the links accordingly).
Recently, Morgan asked me to expand her Dirty empire into Chicago, and I intend to do so. I'm still hooked on transition so hit me up and lets session something big and steep (say a sea wall).

The SkaterTots program was founded by Kyle Brubaker, currently a manager at Stone Edge Skatepark. Last holiday season, Stone Edge was a drop-off location for Toys For Tots donations. Unfortunately, we were not even able to fill an entire box. Kyle decided he would start collecting donations of new and used decks, trucks, wheels, helmets, pads, etc. to create a goal of 50 complete skateboards to be donated to the Toys For Tots program this December. Please help Kyle exceed this goal and give a child a new positive outlet in his/her life by donating any skateboarding equipment you may not be needing. I bet some of you have a few things collecting dust in the garage right now? I'm right, aren't I?

Today I was driving down US1 in South Daytona when a sign along the road caught my eye. The sign was advertising FREE CLOTHING FOR BACK TO SCHOOL. Free?! I thought to myself, "What a wonderful thing to do for someone". When you think about how many citizens in our area are practically the working poor; surviving paycheck to paycheck, barely getting food in the fridge, making magic out of canned goods...It's really reassuring to see such efforts being made to assist anyone in need. I wish more people would stand up and reach out to someone who could use a helping hand.

Bank ramp down to a fun box up to a grind box, over a gold, 1974 VW bug, to a 6ft quarter-pipe (crammed with skaters on a small deck). Then, shot over to boost a hip ramp (or by-pass it via the grind box), back to another bank ramp, to ollie the gap back to your start, or continue back to the otherside of the hip ramp for some lip tricks.....smooooth.

For some reason when you've got something new and fresh to skate infront of you, the sweltering, summer sun of Florida takes a back seat. The skaters lasted all day long, serving as consistent entertainment for the spectators last weekend. Yup, lasting longer, than the wakeboarders who got air blasted, and drenched in a 50 ft long pool every run.

Anyway, between the local possee and skaters cruisin through for the weekend, there was a good mix of styles and tricks: Jeckari, the Woodward bros, Tommy, Eric, Stacie, Adam, Devin... (my memory stops here). All put out for a good contest Saturday and best trick Sunday.

Mad thanks to the man-power behind DK Ramps, Dug Ketterman and Erik Brubaker, who worked hard to build and maintain, so everyone could sk8. I know what they're thinking,Heck, it better be good, cuz we're sk8in too. That's just one benefit of having builders that sk8.

Thanks to Amy from Salon 230 for donating her services, and freshening up people with free haircuts at our booth Saturday and Sunday!! Wank also kindly donated an event tent to Dirt City Missions at the days end. Thanks! Furthermore, DK Ramps is now the keeper of the ramp set-up you skated last wknd, so I know more events are in store. Stone Edge Skatepark offers free food and a free skate contest(with daily admission) every FIRST Friday of every month! Last night, there were short boards under the feet of groms and teens alike in the 9bowl. I couldn't believe that some were able to keep both feet on such a small piece of wood.

I met Nick Perry at Stone Edge Skatepark and he was always rambling about screen printing, or handing out Un-edjucated stickers. I always felt like he was attempting to spark creativity in the local skate scene. I just never really knew what Un-edjucated was, or was all about. So I asked...

What is Un-edjucated Skateboards all about?
It's all about skateboarding and everyone that skates from locals to pros, boys and girls worldwide...

Where and when did all of this start?
It just kind of happened...

Who are the artists behind it?

What are some goals for un-edjucated skateboards?
To be in all the loyal skate shops and have not a team, but a family of skaters who like skating for the hell of it.

Do you sponsor skaters? if so, who are you currently?
Yes, in a way. I'm not one for the whole "team" and "this" and "that" but if you seem like you truly like skating and you're half-way descent then I'll flow a deck and whatnot. I wanna have a family mentality; like we are here for you if you need us.

Has any of your product made its way into a shop?
No. ::laughs:: I'm needing to get on that one!

Actually, making screens ourselves and getting in shops...

This interview is actually from late March, or early April of this year. Being the slacker that I am, I somehow managed to misplace photos, which set the production schedule behind due to my somewhat perfectionist nature. The photos were taken with a disposable camera; so the quality really isn't anything I'd brag about, but atleast there's an idea of the idea of...well...a pro skateboarder in Dirt City.

Aly – Tell me a little about yourself Benji Galloway…
Benji – I was born in August, Georgia, and raised in South Carolina. I moved to Charleston (SC) after my second year in college, to skate.
Charleston, at the time, was like a living episode of the Jerry Springer show.

Aly - Is that was made you leave?
Benji – I left because I wanted to see new places; skate new places. Met a girl, moved to Baltimore, where I lived for a year. Then I moved to Cali. Really, I left Charleston to broaden my horizons.

Aly - How do you get your kicks (fun, not shoes)?
Benji - Riding motorcycles, skateboarding, working on my house, playing pool. I've started reading a little bit again.

Aly - What is the most rewarding part about being a pro skateboarder?
Benji - The travel. For me, as a young man I wondered what the world had to offer, sights, places, and people. Now I travel the world on my skateboard. Truly a blessing of the desires of my heart.

Aly - How long have you been skating?
Benji - 21 years +

Aly -Who do you skate for?
Benji - Bacon skateboards, Kronik energy, Ninja bearings, Split (flow), Type-S (flow)

Aly – Now for the dirt…What was your first impression of Dirt City?
Benji – Dirt Tona is kind of a redneck party central. My first visit was Thanksgiving of ’97 with friends John and Thrasher. We picked up on it right away. It was a town about skateboarding and drinking beer; nothing going on around here. Actually, the first time I passed out at a party was here. We were at the Team Glug house for some skate party ramp festivity when we headed to the International house. I got trashed, passed out around 6 or 7pm with Buck Smith yelling at me to wake up; “Better not be caught slipping!” he says. Yep…a lot of drinking here.

Aly – What’s your perception now?
Benji – Not much different. I do different things now though; like the Bike Week motorcycle events with Nash. There’s more of a broad spectrum than just skateboarding here these days. Skateboarders used to come here to skate Stone Edge, work Bike Week backing beers at Foggy's, and make a good bit of cash. Then take the loot and go on a skate-road trip for a few months in the summer. The Dirt is a party town for sure. The history and scene of the older vert-skating crew is still here. The history of it all gives some reasoning to be willing to travel back and stay. Plus, it’s a good place to use skateboarding to promote motorcycles. It’s nice to see history being kept alive. I believe Martin Ramos has a hand in that by scooping Stone Edge up; keeping it from being completely dozed over.

Aly – Find anything that made you want to pack your shit and get the fuck out?
Benji – Never lived or stayed here long enough. I just don’t see me putting roots down here, but you never know. You really never know what’s going to happen in the future. Never say never.
Chris Collet once told me “Don’t go back man!”
Aly – Who’s Chris Collet?
Benji – He’s the Keith Richards of skateboarding. He actually convinced me to stay in Charleston rather than come to the Dirt to skate. He said it’d be a better outcome; as far as skateboarding was concerned. I love the Charleston Hanger. It’s where my heart is.
Aly – Would you say he was right about the outcome?
Benji – I wouldn’t know; can’t calibrate hindsight. Not much happening in Daytona.

Aly – Have you found an inspiration here, maybe some sort of enlightenment?
Benji – Enlightenment comes with the opening of the eyes in the morning. There’s nothing spiritual here. I try to keep that aspect as far away from here as possible.

Aly - What do you want from this life, right now in this exact moment?
Benji – To travel, skateboard, surround myself with friends, make new ones…and oh yeah, did I say skateboard? ::laughs that “Benji” laugh of his::
I’m also working on remodeling a house.
Aly – Where?
Benji – Vancouver, Washington. I’m pretty much rooted for a while. It’s my launch pad.

Aly – Out of all the places you’ve visited, where’s your favorite?
Benji - ::no hesitation:: Bondi Beach, Australia. I’ve only been twice, but I’ve got this special affection for that place. I can relax there. I don’t feel the constant need to be productive. I can be idol there. I always feel like I have to be doing something; makes it hard for me to relax. I don’t know if it’s the water, the sun, the people, the beach…I’m not trying to pinpoint, it might ruin it.

Aly - Where are you now and what have you got planned?
Benji - Right now, I am home in Vancouver, Washington working on my "fixer upper" house, and preparing to travel to California for the Vans Protec Pool Party. Should be a good contest this year. After that I am heading to Sweden for a road trip with Bacon's distributor for two weeks.

Aly - Where do you get your inspiration from (skateboarding and life)?
Benji - I have been lacking in that department lately. I know that with out my friend Tree, I would not have the motivation to work on my house sometimes. I end up just staring at the walls and thinking about what all needs to get done and not doing anything. I guess that I get inspiration from my friends!!

Aly - What is your advice for kids who are trying to get sponsored?
Benji - Advice? Don't worry about that bubble gum and sparky tail skidder stuff. Just skate because you love it. If you have what it takes to represent someone's company, then your skate talent will speak for itself.
No really, find an old man that hangs at the local park and has a "New Skate Company". Make sure he is weird and really creepy. Then, accept his advances to skate for him. Get free stuff when you just get in his Van and play video games. That is how to get sponsored.

Robert Gamble was a pastor at First Pres. in Daytona Beach, now he lives in the Ukraine to serve at The Way Home Shelter (www.thischildhere.org). So, in his venture to bring homeless kids medical aide and food, he also finds fun stuff like this everyday. Well, sort of, this used to be a Sanitorium, like a hospital. I've noticed that skateboarding often sparks so many outlets for creativity; Especially among those teenage-hearts that are screaming to a find a place to feel at peace. You notice them drawing elaborate pieces on their grip tape with paint markers, or creating stencils and using spray paint to make their own t-shirts; ofcourse then, there are your photography and film admirers who have this passion to take it as far as they can. How far can you go in this town? I'd hope far enough to make it out...and make it in where you've been dreaming to be.

This is Wyatt Woodward. He's a 17 year old Dirt City resident who has been making skate videos with his friends since I've been working at Stone Edge Skatepark. I've noticed the advancement in his skills, quality, equipment, and passion for filming...So I asked to see some of his newest stuff...

W- Out-of-town spots are legit.

A- Has any of your footage been used anywhere other than your personal interest?
W- Skateboarding.com posted a clip once. It was just Aaron racking, but it was worth it.

A- How long have you been filming for?
W- Seriously? 1 1/2 years. I've been skating longer than I've been filming.

A- Why do you film skateboarders?
W- It's fun. It feels good after you film a nice trick. It feels good to call it yours and say, "I filmed that!"

The Dirt City locals rolled into Kona Sunday to catch the 2nd day of the 2-day event. Too bad there was an un-loaded camera on my arm for the Masters part of the day.

Here are some pool-side shots of the Pro Division for your enjoyment. Maybe they can give you an idea as to just how talented these skaters really are. Most of these faces and names were new to me. The skills portrayed on that cement were impressive and inspirational beyond anything I had imagined...and the photographers and fans alike were eating it up almost faster than they could dish it out.

Jimmy the Greek. Heard he's some sort of legend. With a style like that, I'd believe it.

Steve Reeves really gave some sort of show.

Who is this?! Morgan Burgess makes it head-high, making me glad I wasn't a judge.

That Florida sun is sure to do a number on you, especially if you're skating. Looks like Tim Johnson may be getting a taste of it. Don't let this photo fool you though. He was determined to shred, and boy did he ever!

Witty commentary from Martin Ramos! Thanks Martin! This was the 2nd year for the Florida Bowlriders Cup Series. The events that have taken place have left people wanting more. The possibilities are endless, so I can only imagine what he'll have in store for us in 2009.

Schedule Changes
"The Florida Bowlriders Cup is growing at an incredible rate. Because of this, Treaty Skatepark has been removed from the schedule to make room for a two day event at Kona Skatepark on April 26th and 27th. Due to the number of entries, it would be impossible to hold an event including all divisions on a single day and not exclude someone. So, instead of holding two good contests, we choose to hold a single two day contest of the caliber deserving of the competitors."

We are all anticipating the 2 day event at Kona this upcoming weekend. If you've never skated Kona, you might want to. It's an outdoor skate park that offers a little something fun for everyone. We'll have some inclusive coverage for you following the event. Some of us here in the Dirt are going to be making our way up to catch the last day of this inspirational series of excitment.

In 1995 two life changing experiences took place for me. The first was believing in Jesus, and the second was the accumulation 13 dollars, which purchased my first skateboard. Some kids are ostracized because of being that they aren’t athletic, pretty, tall, or whatever. For me social stigma developed because I had become a Christian, and wanted to do things differently because of my friends. So, when high school came around I was cool with everybody, but I never got invites to parties, or whatever. Looking back I think those people probably viewed me as some kind of vehicle for God’s judgment, but all I wanted was to be their friend.
I grew up skateboarding, and skateboarding a lot, because I had nothing else going on. Skateboarding brought me into a community of people that have treated me better than some of my own family. In 2006 Jason Brown was running N:CE Skateboards in Louisville, KY. We met each other, and became partners in crime. It was this connection that gave me my connection in Daytona Beach. Before coming to Daytona, I asked Morgan McDole if I would find out what Dirt City was (I had no idea), she confidently sent a MySpace message:

Morgan, told the truth - I did find “out about that”. While I was in Dirt City:
· Thousands of bikers partied in the streets
· Benji Galloway skated Stone Edge with groms (and he liked it)
· grinded pool coping for hours
· The GE Jam went down (tons shredding). Good Job Dug, Aly, Kyle etc.!
· Kids made fun of my glasses by calling me Bob Burnquist
· saw footage of Stone Edge in the eighties
· lived off of Peanut Butter, Oatmeal, and MaxWell House coffee
· Over heard O.G. Dirt guys talking about the back whens
· Sustained minor trauma to all four limbs

· Made friends
· Met Ryan Sheckler -the Heckler version
· Partied at the Stone Edge house
· Didn’t miss Chicago, or Home

To summarize, Dirt City is a lot of things to a lot of people, and to me that’s the beauty of that place. The nine bowl at Stone Edge has been thrashed for nearly two decades! Personally, the grom rippers got annoying, but man they ripped, and kept a good vibe going. So, In Dirt City I found all the things missing from my earlier skate days: friends, multi-generational shredding, and a quality park.

------ Wes is a good visitor...he just wants to sk8, so I didn't really have worry about entertaining him. Though, all my sk8 videos have been lost through friends over the years, so I think Osiris's "Feed the Need" lost the "get pumped" effect after watching it ten times. Everyday he came home with a new cut. Mad props. So here are a few 9-bowl shots, a typical day, in the hot FLA heat. ~Morgan

Here are a few pics and the time sheets from Friday's slalom race. I thought I'd have you all in the 9-bowl. Nope, all I got is new cuts. It was like an obstacle course, and to finish the run was a feat. Everyone seemed to get hung up on the 4th turn and zig zaggies if you got too much speed. Just when we thought we were in high cotton with our chili-dog eatin, Dug Ketterman added a little Texas flavor to the Florida buffet last weekend. And I’m not talking about those free peppercinis in the condiment section, the skaters seem to go FREE....I mean crazy for. Apparently, we have not been cleanin’ up properly.

Yes, after last weekend, I am quite convinced, that if this country does go into an economic depression, skaters will be the last ones standing. Why? Because they know the value of recycling. “Useless” washers, dryers, and refrigerators were bolted down and scraped properly. And boy do skaters know what’s right for them. The profits from the contest were used to buy a new washer and dyer for the stinky rental pads. So yay! …for those people.
Once again, skaters prove to be the most economical, creative, and resourceful of the animal planet. And, if anyone tries to claim a GE or maybe it’ll be a Maytag Jam next year, know its roots are in Texas with the initials DK and whoever else was first in on that backyard session.

Lastly, thanks to Steaz Energy Drinks for serving up the ice cooler of orgasmic, I mean organic (I know-lame- but I couldn’t help myself) FREE drinks, trophies, and Team Cup for the GE Jam. There were bikes of various shapes, sizes, and colors in every direction you would look. Every male face seemed to be sporting some sort of fancy facial hair structure. Wish I would have gotten some photos of the moustaches that stretched from ear to ear. The Nash Motorcycle Comany had one hell of a show for us. Their custom cycles were revolutionary in our lot...like nothing we have seen. They brought with them, a few great skaters from the Bacon Team. So there was bikes, boards, and all kinds of good times. Aren't you glad you made it out? If you didn't, I bet you wish you had.

This part is like a snap shot because I get to develop a first impression of our featured interviewee in your mind. What I remember about Brewce Martin are three things. His skating, his muscles, and his son (wierd what your mind retains at age 6). His skating: I've never seen any one body move so fast, damn powerful, and fluid. Though most likely you'll go for broke when skating with him, in order to retain a sense of dignity, he is an encourager. His muscles: he had these crazy shoulder muscles; though lean from working, skating, and probably starving all day. His son: he was around my age, so he hung out at my house sometimes, and made me watch Terminator and Bat Man movies. I was more of a He-Man and Ninja Turtle fan, but whatever. Brandon rips like his dad now, but back then, you couldn't get the boy to stand up. He just rolled around the park, content in his state, pushing on one knee. Over the years, Brewce and I have only had a few e-mail conversations. Though, he has always generously extended the invitation to come visit Skatopia.

MM: What current endeavors do you have your hand in right now?

Brewce: A feature length documentary is in post production,
tons of dreams of stuff to build,
a three year old daughter- Amity Whitelight,
another amazing year of an amazing life,
good things are always on my plate.

MM: What brings you joy?

Brewce: My kids bring me joy.
- Seeing people have an experience they never imagined
- creating new wonderous surroundings,
- living without restrictions and limitations others try to impose upon you- freedom to be.
- To know you impact people and inspire dreams to be actualized.

MM: You’re a fine example, of someone who built their dream set-up, when did you start dreaming of having this set-up, and a sk8 museum?

Brewce: I lived like that most of my life, so when I built my first ramp in my basement at the age of 10, I realized the freedom that comes from having your own scene

MM: How many years have you been collecting skateboards, and how many are in your collection?

Brewce: I started collecting in 1990, because my mom found an old board at a yard sale. It happened to be one I rode in the 70's. There are over 2,000 boards and tens of thousands of the artifacts in the museum.
It is now a non-profit so any donations are tax-deductible

MM: How did you start skating?

Brewce: Borrowing boards in the early 70's.
I won my first board from the newspaper I delivered for in 1978. My picture was on the front page, starting a long streak as a media darling.

MM: Describe your set-up in Ohio, and how it came about.

Brewce: I left Fla. because I wanted to be in more rural surroundings
and to build without restriction. I had several bad experiences in Fla. building in my yard. I was evicted in Jacksonville for a ramp in my yard. My set up is too large to describe; we have a lot to skate.

MM: What was the first skateable piece to go in?

Brewce: The first piece was the Epcot Bean- a 13 foot bowl in my 100 year old barn.

MM: How is the sk8 scene in Rutland, Ohio?

Brewce: Oddly enough, there were no skateboarders in the whole county when we began. Now there are hundreds of hillbilly redneck skaters.

MM: Who helps build and maintain the place?

Brewce: Everybody present is responsible.
Mostly Brandon and myself, but there are thousands of cult followers.

MM: Is it free?

Brewce: Yes and no.
We expect those who can to contribute; those who cant are asked to work on new projects or whatever needs done if anything.

MM: When is your next Bowl Bash?

Brewce: June 13-14 will be the 13th Annual, come get some under your belt!

MM: Would you say you have one of the most hard-core set-ups eva!

Brewce: I will let others say what they may bout that.
I just say we let people have some freedom back.
Trust me you are losing some of that everyday.

MM: What should you expect when visiting Skatopia?

Brewce: To skate, camp, and pitch in to make it better- pretty simple formula.

MM: Where are you originally from, and how long did you live in Daytona Beach?

Brewce: Born in Hartford, CT., grew up in West Virginia, where I call home.

MM: Describe one of the hardest times in your life, and what it has done for you as a result?

Brewce: Losing my grandpa crushed me, cause he taught me about land and the peace you can find in nature. He loaned me the money for the down payment on Skatopia.
Having knee surgery July 31, 2005.
I don’t sit well, so it was hard.
But I recovered fully and still have the madness.

MM: Describe life in FLA when you lived there? What got you there, and what made you leave?

Brewce: Random chance got me there- good skating, good times;
some of my fondest memories are from Daytona Beach.

That house got condemned.

MM: How old is Brandon now? Is he following in your footsteps?

Brewce: Brandon is the other joy in my life.
He is 22.
He is an amazing skater and individual.

TimeLine Contest Recap- Paradise Funplex

Timeline Skateboards had a contest at Merritt Island- Paradise Funflex last weekend. Unfortunately, I wasn't there; so, I can't report back to you the tricks that went down, the best slam, and the energy that filled the air. Fortunately though, I can share, because James (Duce) Smith was supporting as always, and took these photographs.

With that, this is the story I leave you with....my memories of Paradise Funplex. I relearned rock to fakeys on Paradise Funplex's micro-mini back in highschool. This was after I had gotten back into skating for the fourth-hundred time. Anyway, I was doing f/s rocks and dropping in on the extenstion of the vert, before I got my rock to fakeys back. Yes, that was a good day. I now could roll back and forth on a ramp with out turning around.
Here's the even funnier part. My sister spotted me on that first make. I was 16 years old, she 20, and here we are on a 1.5 inch mini ramp. I learned 3 other tricks in the next 2 runs after that: 1/2 cab rock, 360 rock, and boardslide (I just had to redeem myself). So, hopefully, I made you feel better with that story, that you had your rock to fakeys before the age of 16. Blah blah.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

One thing every good magazine has is an editorial section; a little nugget the editor wants whispered in your ear, as you flip through the pages. So, here goes mine.

I am always up for leaving my eyes and ears open throughout the day, just in case God has his own editorial note for me. God is always switching things up, reaching out to you, where you can be reached. At anyrate, this month anyway, it has been through sayings on posters. I have jotted down at least 8 good quotes from posters that just kept catching my eye. And today, as I started to write this editorial, I actually began writing something along the lines of the reward being in the journey… that is, until I saw “my” poster. It was hanging on a classroom wall, nothing fancy. It read, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

I thought this quote tied perfectly into one of the things Dirt City Zine is about; which is, finding the beauty in our community, however each of us may represent it. Furthermore, without being in tune with my surroundings today, I would have missed the poster, which gave me inspiration for this note. Thanks God.

Aly: Hardly any of your work is done on actual canvas; Ever thought of painting body parts?
Rex: Yes, but I’ve got a reputation for being a creepy person, so I don’t bother asking.

Aly: What is your favorite medium to work with?
Rex: I really like India ink right now. I never stick with one certain medium when making a piece though. Everything I do is a mixed media project.

Aly: Have you done any experimenting recently? (Like what you did with the glass)
Rex: Not with materials, but I’ve been using different techniques lately. I’m trying to make things messier, and less structured.

Aly: How long have you being interested in and doing art?
Rex: All my life. I did ALOT of finger painting for a kid. Then I started making my own comic strips when I was 5, because I was obsessed wit the Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, and Bloom County. Then when I was 12, I started skateboarding; I would buy blank decks just so I could make my own graphics, and then t-shirts. I fell into the "Professional art world" by accident. I had some paintings that I made to spite my art teacher that I put up online.

Aly: What are a few of your biggest influences?
Rex: Stephen Gammell, crime scene photographs, Warhol, Templeton, Basquiat, the Beautiful Losers crew, Graffiti, and anyone doing something worth looking at in the current contemporary art scene.

Aly: Where do you want to be in 10 years?
Rex: California, being super rich and mean to everyone.

Aly: Name some of the various art projects you have been involved with…. for instance, music, clothing, tattoo designs?
Rex: I'm right now (literally) trying to get a hold of this guy in Philly who was supposed to put out a sweater I’m designing for his Clothing company, but I’ve been so busy with all these shows, I’ve spaced on the project. I'm showing 4 pieces this Friday in a week long show in a Downtown Deland Gallery/Cafe'. Then I’m doing another show at the same place this April where I’ll be showing 12+ pieces for a 2 man show.
I got a few shows lined up in California later this year, and a few other projects I’m currently working on with other venues. So I’m busy.

Aly: Normally, how long do you tend to spend on one piece?
Rex: However long it takes till I feel it’s done. I try and keep it under 12 hours.

Aly: What’s the hardest part about being a freelance artist?
Rex: Having to work a full time job in order to support yourself.

There are many reasons why you should not throw away your old deck

1. You can sand the bottom to make it smooth like butter
2. Then personalize it with pen, paint, and make it luster
3. For it to be hung as wall decoration
4. Or given as a present, personalized creation
5. Maybe even sell it for prime dollar
5. Eventually making you a career, avoiding a white collar

This is a deck done by Ali.... her boyfriend Boogie would sand the bottom of old decks for her to draw on. She got offered $200.00 for her first deck, which she declined for sentimental purposes. If you look close enough you can find Ali's name in the art, as well as Boogie's.

Ode to the Glugger Scene

It is only right that I start out giving some history. Each day I will post a new page of the 1st ever and only pages of the Team Glug Zine. The best way to explain the pulse of the 80s and early 90s skate scene, in Daytona, is for you to see for yourself. There were many little pockets of skaters, but none who can claim Thrasher Magazine's 10th Anniversary Host Award, and having a house codemnned. They are still ripping pools and the concrete scene....that is all I have for today.... MM

Last weekend, Dug and I took a trip to Tampa, and one of the missions was to find the Bro Bowl, which is in danger of being extinct very soon. Despite the fact that neither of us had any sense of how to get around Tampa, with its dead end streets and lanes that leave no option but to turn, we eventually fell upon it.

The Bro Bowl starts at length, at the top of a hill, and then opens its mouth wide, or spits you into its stomach (whichever you choose) at the bottom. It feels so much a part of the natural environment; it awes me to think this bowl is in danger of being removed. New Smyrna Beach SKATEPARK

Under the original bidding law, if you submit a design, you can not be involved in the bidding to build. Unfortunately, Team Pain donated the ramp plans for the new NSB Skate Park, so they would have been cut out, which could have potentially left who knows who to demolish a great design.

Luckily, the city engineer and my dad, who is an attorney for NSB, pushed a reenactment for a design and build bidding. So, the City Commission agreed, and Team Pain is still in the running for the bid. The ground breaking should be in no time. The park is expected around Sept. 2008, if not sooner.
